Assignment #8: International Media

Having been socially distanced and spending so much time inside, I have had plenty of time to sit on my couch and binge-watch new shows and movies. This show that I will be talking about today was right up my alley because it is a crime-type show with a bank robbery plot. The show is entitled Money Heist also known as Casa de Papel which translates to “house of paper” in English. The show was given the name Money Heist for its releases in the United States. The show originally came on television weekly in Spain before it was canceled and made its way to Netflix. Some of my top movies have a similar plot like: Set It Off, Lupin, and The Negotiator, so I figured I would enjoy the show as well. This show gave the plot a new twist and an international perspective, from the robbers to the protocol that their government uses during heists. The show chronicles a heist mastermind in his journey to avenge his father, with the help of an unconventional group of criminals looking to take home the big bucks from some of the most powerful banks in Spain.

The show released its fourth season on April 3rd, 2020. Which was just in time for people to finally start the show if they hadn’t already, which got people raving over the show on social media. With the show ranked in the Top 10 on Netflix for weeks and all seemed to start bingeing the show at once and took to social media to rant about how that should have started the show sooner because it is so addictive. This show is known for its many twists and turns that the show has to offer with each episode. The show is translated from its original language of Spanish into English for Netflix.

One of the main characters in the show is known for putting her hair into quick buns with a pencil, last summer viewers turned the bun into a viral video challenge. Men and women with long hair took to TikTok to record their attempts at mastering the quick pencil bun. The show is so interesting because the heists are well thought out, to the point that they can last multiple episodes all while feeling realistic. Not to mention we get to see the mastermind for the heist assume every obstacle that could arise, so when they happen we get to watch the robbers be ahead of the game.
