Assignment #10: Wild Card

Image
On April 11th of 2021, Daunte Wright a 20-year-old native of Minnesota had his life taken at the hands of a police officer from the Brooklyn Center Police Department in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Wright and his girlfriend were originally pulled over on a traffic stop for expired vehicle registration when the officers saw air fresheners hanging in his rearview window, which is illegal in the state of Minnesota and began to investigate. After running Wright’s name the officers discovered a gross misdemeanor warrant for the arrest of Daunte Wright. The officers are claiming that when they went in to arrest Wright he began resisting and attempted to get back in his vehicle when he was shot once in the chest. The officer, Kim Porter, who fired the deadly shot is claiming that it was not her intention to shoot Daunte, she thought she was using her taser and not her gun. Porter has since resigned from her job along with the city’s police chief Ti...

Assignment #9: Classmate Blog Critique

Image
For this assignment, I have the pleasure of critiquing and bragging on two of my classmates for the blogs that they have put together for this course. The first student is Cory Evans, junior Mass Communication major from Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He and I have taken a series of mass media courses together over the last three years, so I have been able to watch him grow as a writer. Cory always seems to find a way to tie his blog posts to things that he has some type of interest in, which can easily be shown in his writing. He writes with lots of passion and detail. I have noticed he writes a lot of things that pertain to gaming, music, and entertainment. As someone who knows nothing about gaming or video games in general I always find his blogs on the matter to be informative and interesting. He also seems to blog about various types of music that he enjoys listening to good musicians. All of his posts have good visuals and interactivity that keep me ...

Assignment #8: International Media

Image
Having been socially distanced and spending so much time inside, I have had plenty of time to sit on my couch and binge-watch new shows and movies. This show that I will be talking about today was right up my alley because it is a crime-type show with a bank robbery plot. The show is entitled Money Heist also known as Casa de Papel which translates to “house of paper” in English. The show was given the name Money Heist for its releases in the United States. The show originally came on television weekly in Spain before it was canceled and made its way to Netflix. Some of my top movies have a similar plot like: Set It Off, Lupin, and The Negotiator, so I figured I would enjoy the show as well. This show gave the plot a new twist and an international perspective, from the robbers to the protocol that their government uses during heists. The show chronicles a heist mastermind in his journey to avenge his father, with the help of an unconvention...

Assignment #7: Social Media

Image
Social media in today’s society has become such a large part of the lives of those who use it. It was initially created as a means to share ideas, thoughts, and information through various communities and virtual networks. The purpose of social media is to build the trust of relationships as well as to persuade and inform. We are well past the days of MySpace, but they still hold true to some core intentions of social media. I’m sure everyone still has an older relative or two who loves to post old embarrassing pictures of the family or posts pictures of their latest cooking creations. While that element of social media still exists there is also this new business side to social media that is expanding rapidly.            It seems like there are always two types of people on social media, those who happen to be and those who want to be. Those who happen to be are people who are on social media for the camaraderie...

Assignment #6: Critiquing a Media Critic

Image
Since we have been quarantined in our homes for the last year, people have had nothing but time to catch up on movies and crazy reality television. Now that people have been home and have more time to focus on the small things or the bigger things in these films. I enjoy YouTube for a plethora of things, one of which being watching critics review films especially some that may be trending online for being good or bad. I typically like to watch these reviews after I've already watched the movies or series so that I can find things that I may have missed. One of my favorite influencers to watch that I would also classify as a media critic is Evelyn Ngugi.            She is typically known by her screen name Evelyn From the Internet, she started her YouTube journey back in 2007. She graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2011 with a Bachelor’s in Journalism with an emphasis in Magazines. Evelyn started ...

Assignment #5: Movies

Image
In such a month as Black History month, I could not think of a better way to start my Valentine’s Day weekend of festivities. The film made its way to the HBOMAX subscription service in February of 2021, just before Valentine’s Day. The film Judas and The Black Messiah is  rated-R and is classified as a Biography/Dram. My initial review of the film was that I enjoyed it as well as the exposure that the film gave. The film gave insight into the Black Panther and the and how on how the  activist leader of the party, Fred Hampton, was targeted,  taunted and murdered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the local law enforcement. The film also showed the  positive impact that the Party had not only within their con communities but also to unite other organized groups to make a greater impact.            I was pleased with how the movie took time to incorporate the core elements that the Pant...

Assignment #4: Technology

Image
I seem to never fail, every time I log onto Youtube or TikTok it never fails that I see someone advertising for and talking about The Coldest Water. This brand is known for selling a variety of water bottles with patented technology that ensures its customers get the coldest water. After seeing this water bottle so much I’ve decided to look to see what the company has to offer. I’ll also be looking at how their marketing via social media has impacted their sales.
